Machine Learning : Simplified

Theoretically, Machine Learning and AI are two different terms, however the line of separation is debatable, vague and sometimes blurred and so I am going to use them interchangeably here.

Machine Learning is just giving computers the ability to do things on their own and learn from experience, no matter how big or small the task.

It doesn’t really have to be a 6'2" killing robot from the future to call it Artificial Intelligence.

Although that would certainly qualify.

Why do I care? From facial recognition and voice assistants in your phone to AI-enabled hospitals, retail stores and self-driving cars, everywhere you will look you are surrounded by these systems.

But Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning is a really broad subject, with applications in countless domains.

It is not possible for a single person to be able to cover everything.

There are so many papers already present in almost every field even remotely connected to AI, that new researchers always prefer to read previous work thoroughly before starting on their own.

This can mean reading anywhere between 20 or 30 to even 100s of papers.

That seems like a lot of work!!Yes it definitely is.

It makes sense to do so for researchers who plan to spend months or even years with the particular field.

But what about you and me?.What about the curious few who just want a understanding of how things work without reading 100s of research papers? With so much focus on trying to improve AI systems everyday, not much focus is given to trying to create a learning slope for people who would like to get a glimpse.

I have created this series in a try to write small, compact and easy to understand blogs that can provide an introduction to various fields of AI.

OK!.Alright, I’m convinced.
