I was a teenage data scientist

I was a teenage data scientistBen MorettiBlockedUnblockFollowFollowingApr 30I take my daughter to gymnastics.

One of the mums there asked if I could talk to her teenage son about what I do as he’s really interested in computers.

Turns out he is learning C++, Python and Javascript to do school projects.

He was really interested in what I do in renewables and analysis of solar and electricity data, and so I fired up R Studio, showed him R, data tables, ggplot and some correlation analysis.

So now he’s going to learn R, at 15.

We talked about his school subjects for the next two years, and what degree he wants to do.

Lots of physics and maths, he wants to do electrical engineering & computer science or maths and statistics.

Also talked about Postgres and relational databases — this is a much underrated area! But he was really amazed with R and data science.

He’s also taught himself Python and developed a game with PyGame.

So I set him some homework — he has to learn Postgres, and SQL, build a database for his fishing records, and then learn Django and build a web application for it.

Smart kid, felt really good being able to speak to him about this.

Mentoring is a great way to give back to the community.
